about Jonathan

Jonathan Winter is an independent Post-War and Contemporary Art appraiser and advisor based in New York City, with nearly twenty years of experience working in the arts. In 2018 he started J. Winter Art Associates LLC, which provides art consulting services to private clients, and in 2024 added fine art appraisal to his practice after becoming qualified by the Appraisers Association of America. He started his career in 2008 at Marlborough Gallery in New York, a fine art gallery specializing in Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary Art with multiple national and international locations. Following his time at Marlborough Gallery, Jonathan transitioned to the auction world, joining Phillips’ Contemporary Art Department where he was responsible for the overall composition of the May and November Contemporary Art auction catalogues. Later, Jonathan rejoined the gallery sector, as a Senior Associate at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, which specializes in Modern and Post-War Art with a focus on African American artists. Shortly after, Jonathan started his advisory practice as he watched his family’s private collection grow under his careful management and thorough research of the evolving art market, and began to work with new collectors to begin their own personal collecting journeys. He has worked on permanent collection acquisitions involving such artists as Hernan Bas, George Condo, Rashid Johnson, Vija Celmins, Carmen Herrera, Charles Gaines, Sanford Biggers, Marcel Dzama, Teresita Fernandez, Vik Muniz, Sterling Ruby, Jesse Mockrin, and Larry Bell, among many others.

Over the course of his career, he has also been a key speaker on the art market and collecting at lectures at UBS in New York and Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Additionally, Jonathan sits on the National Advisory Council to the Tang Museum at Skidmore College as well as being part of the Curator’s Circle at the Guggenheim Museum, and an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America.

Jonathan holds a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Skidmore College, and a Masters in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art.

Decorative

Art is a perfect way to decorate a home. It can add pops of color, accentuate ceiling heights, and portray your individual taste and style. J. Winter Art Associates can help you decorate your space with the perfect choices of colors, scale, and composition to fill your bare walls.

Investment

Fine art has become a smart way to invest. The Wall Street Journal once declared that “art is among the hottest markets on Earth,” with certain works selling for fifteen times their asking prices, and Contemporary Art outperforming stock indexes for many years. J. Winter Art Associates can help you purchase artwork that is not only beautiful but a smart investment based on thorough research of the artist and evolving art market.

Appraisals

Many people own artwork, have been given artwork, or were bequeathed artwork that they have no idea what it is worth. Knowing your art's value can be extremely beneficial for your own general knowledge, having a sense of pricing for when you might be ready to sell, as well as for insurance, charitable donations, or estate planning. J. Winter Art Associates can appraise works in your collection to obtain fair market or retail replacement values, and to help know your artwork's worth.

Jonathan is a qualified art appraiser, specializing in Post-War and Contemporary Art, and is an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America.

The Brand Story

J. Winter Art Associates LLC was originally created as an entity for Jonathan Winter to collect art under and grow his family’s private art collection.

Since its inception, J. Winter Art Associates has evolved past his own private collection and expanded to advise others in starting or improving upon their own collecting needs. Whether it be for decorative purposes or investment opportunities, each collector comes with their own set of priorities and desires.

Based on each client’s specific parameters, Jonathan assists with selecting different artists and sourcing their artworks, helping to choose the best options per the client’s taste and budget, making sure the client is paying a fair price based on current market values, getting the lowest shipping quote, and arranging delivery and installation of the artworks purchased at their destination.

Jonathan is also a qualified appraiser, able to value individual artworks or entire collections for insurance purposes, tax purposes, or the owner’s general knowledge.

J. Winter Art Associates strives not only to acquire the best pieces for clients, but to introduce them to what can be considered an elusive or sometimes daunting art world and make it a fun and welcoming experience.
